Next weekend the Bristol Men’s Water Polo team take on both UCL and Imperial in two matches which could prove decisive in their pursuit of a third year as BUCS Champions. The two matches, to be played on Saturday 1st February, will be the final two in the group stages of the BUCS competition and will be featured as part of UBU's new Focus Match programme. Bristol are currently top of the table in the Premier South league after winning all of their matches before Christmas, and will bag 50 BUCS points for Bristol if they win the league overall. The biggest match of the weekend is likely to be against Imperial, who finished third overall in BUCS last year. In November, however, Bristol successfully beat last year’s BUCS Runners Up Bath 21-4, demonstrating the strength of this year’s team. Men’s Captain Joe Worland says “We’ve got a strong squad of players that have produced great results so far. If we can perform at the level we expect of ourselves we should win our final group matches. The real challenge starts in the knockout rounds -we expect ourselves to win BUCS so we can’t afford any hiccups.”
Elsewhere in the club, the Women’s Water Polo team are also on track for a great year. They have won 4 of the 5 matches played so far, only narrowly losing to Cambridge 5-4 in November. The girls have two matches, against King’s College and Cardiff, left to play in the group stages of the BUCS competition. A win in either of these matches will put the Women’s team comfortably through to the knock-out rounds.
The swimming team also put in a good performance before Christmas in the BUCS Teams Championships, qualifying for the Teams Finals at Sheffield in March. This puts them on track to meet their target of being promoted to Division Two.
