Between the 21st and 23rd of February, the city of Sheffield once again played host to BUCS Gatorade Nationals. University of Bristol Swimming Team travelled to Ponds Forge International Sports Centre looking to swim well and build good form going into the Swimming Team Shield Final on the 22nd of March.
The weekend got off to a great start with the Women's Freestyle relay making the B final (coming 8th) and the Men's Freestyle relay beating their entry time (despite Emily Cockerill and Adam Massey sporting significant knee and shoulder injuries respectively!) and Grace France achieving a personal best in the 800m freestyle. Good form continued on the Saturday with the Women's Medley relay team narrowly missing out on another B final and strong swims from across the board from Bristol swimmers. Success was celebrated by wearing our team tracksuits to the slightly high-brow Piccolinos Italian restaurant (cue odd looks from the other patrons!) Sunday was rounded out well despite the strain of the weekend beginning to set in, with Grace, Emily Williams and Nicolas Fatras all giving strong swims in the 400m freestyle. Our informal Swimmer of the Event went to Emily Cockerill for giving it her all despite her serious knee injury. Exemplary attitudes and strong performances from all involved leave captains Felicity Hamilton-Cox and Edward Tye looking confidently towards the Team Shield trophy. Dare to dream.
